Ilmenite ore mining can be used for producing iron ore and related products in ore processing plants with mineral equipments such as ilmenite ore crusher , ilmenite ore grinder machine, ilmenite ore feeder , screening equipment , etc.

Ilmenite is a weekly magnetic titanium-iron oxide mineral which is iron-black or steel-gray. There is no ilmenite mine in Malaysia, but the ilmenite can be got from amang retreatment plants in Perak and Selangor from the processing of alluvial tin.

Production of titanium carbide from ilmenite

The production of titanium carbide (TiC) powders from ilmenite ore (FeTiO3) powder by means of carbothermal reduction synthesis coupled with hydrochloric acid (HCl) leaching process was investigated. A mixture of FeTiO3 and carbon powders was reacted at 1500oC for 1 hr under flowing argon gas. Subsequently, synthesized product of Fe-TiC powders were leached by 10% HCl solutions for 24 hrs to get final product of TiC powders. The powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. The product particles were agglomerated in the stage after the leaching process, and the size of this agglomerate was 12.8 μm with a crystallite size of 28.8 nm..

Ilmenite ore crushing and grinding

Fine ground ilmenite ore is converted into titanium dioxide via the sulfate process. Titanium dioxide pigment can also be produced from higher titanium feedstocks such as rutile and leucoxene via a chloride acid process. While the ilmenite ore is mined, crushing plant and grinding plant is used to get fineness ground powder.

During the primary crushing, the crushing capacity and discharging size can be adjusted flexible. In order to get the particles small enough, secondary crushing and tertiary crushing is needed, while the grain size can meet the demand, the crushed ilmenite ore will be transported to screening plant to separate and grade. Then washing plant will be used to refine the ilmenite ore and clean the useless particles.

In order to get particles suitable for sulfate process, grinding mill is needed. The grinding mill can size the ilmenite ore into powder under 0.05mm which can maximize the surface.

Ilmenite ore introduction

Ilmenite, with the chemical formula FeTiO3, is an economically important and interesting mineral. It is an opaque mineral, black to brownish-red, with a metallic or submetallic luster, and belongs to the Hematite-Ilmenite-Magnetite Group in the Oxide and Hydroxide Class. Ilmenite is currently mined in Australia, Brazil, Russia, Canada, Sri Lanka, Norway, China, South Africa, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Sierra Leone, and the United States.

In Thailand, it was found in tin ore (cassiterite) deposits in Chiangrai, Chiangmai, Lamphun, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Suphun Buri, Phuket, Phanga, and Ranong. Ilmenite is the chief source of titanium dioxide, TiO2, which is used in paint pigments, welding-rod coating, and in the manufacture of the metal titanium (Wattanachit, 2004).
